CRAFT | Apothecary Jar Labels

Friday, October 5

If you haven't started decorating for Halloween yet...
Here's a fun little project to do this weekend...
something simple to add to your "spooky" decor...

I had SUCH fun designing these labels a couple of months ago for the halloween table I'll be sharing with you soon...
Maybe a little TOO much fun.
I found myself full-focused on coming up with some original label names...
to throw into the mix of the typical labels we all generally see at this time of year.
My two favorites are these...

"Decomposed Mummy Powder" and "Dehydrated Tongue of Toad Crumble"
(told you I got creative....*wink*)

After you've gathered some empty jars from around your home...
filled them with dye-colored water or ingredients found in your pantry...
you can essentially print, trim, stick on the labels and call it done.

LEVEL ONE - No fuss. (using the pre-colored labels)
Print. Trim. Stick.
Simply print the Apothecary Jar Labels onto regular printing paper...
Trim to size using scissors, paper trimmer or craft punch.
Use double-stick tape to secure to various bottles of choice.

For those of us who like to push the "creative envelope" just a tad...
Here's a technique you can use for adding an authentic aged element to your labels...

LEVEL TWO - A little fuss. (using the black and white labels)
Chalking.
This method saves yourself some colored ink...

Print the black and white edition of the Apothecary Jar Labels onto regular printing paper.
Trim to size using scissors, paper trimmer or craft punch.
Using crafting chalk of  your choice...
add some dimension and character to your labels.
Directions: Using a cotton ball, rub several different shades of brown chalk to your labels for an aged look.
Use double-stick tape to secure to various bottles of choice.

Chalking is one of my favorite crafting techniques for "aging" things.
You may remember the labels I used in the "Unlock the Spirit of the Holiday Season" dessert table I designed?
I used chalk on the edges of those labels using a q-tip and then rubbed them with a little bit of light brown chalk.

If you've never tried it, I hope you're encouraged to do so.
If not for this project...for something in the future.

I've created several different label sizes for you to choose from...
as well as providing them in both a colored and black and white edition...
allowing you more versatility when choosing your bottles.
Those of you with the Silhouette™ could print these onto that lovely NEW silver foil paper!

Although I did purchase some of the corked bottles you see in these photos...
I also used recycled bottles that work just as well and add pops of interest...
• green, tall white wine vinegar bottle
• spaghetti sauce jar
• smaller bottles from my collection of vintage finds I typically use as bud vases
• tiny jars leftover from the "Love You to the Moon" Baby Shower

PLEASE come back and share your photos.
I'd love to see the creative things you do with them!!!

KEEPiNG iT REAL
I first printed my labels onto a brown paper bag and loved the results.
However...the texture of the labels didn't work too well with the double-stick tape...
I found labels coming undone every time I turned around.
Also, it's much more time consuming trimming the brown paper bag to 8.5x11 for feeding through the printer.
AND...
the brown paper has to be backed and taped to a sheet of cardstock in order for it to feed properly.
And there are no guarantees it still won't jam your printer.

Not worth the extra time...even for me. *wink*

Hi Jessica!

The labels are still available, they just aren't "active" in my shoppe since we are out of that season right now. Feel free to contact me via Etsy and I'll just set up a custom listing for you.
